A Veal Family Tradition since 1961, Shelby County families can visit this free roadside attraction right off of the Acton exit on I-74
If you're looking for a magical winter experience to share with your family, look no further than Veal's Ice Tree, a heartwarming tradition that has been enchanting the northside of Shelby County for over 60 years. This charming attraction, nestled on a picturesque hill in Indianapolis, offers a unique and delightful experience for families seeking some winter fun.
A Happy Accident Turned Tradition
Back in 1961, Vierl Veal faced the challenge of entertaining his four children in a winter without snow. Seizing the opportunity, he sprayed a fine mist of water onto the hill, creating an unexpected masterpiece – the first Veal's Ice Tree. Mother Nature played her part when a change in wind direction soaked some honeysuckle bushes, forming the family's inaugural ice tree.
A Family Legacy Continues
Fast forward to today, and Veal's Ice Tree is now in the hands of the third generation of the Veal family. This year's ice tree began taking shape with the careful hands of Wynter Veal-Drummond, who, along with her husband, built the frame with love and dedication. And yes, her mother did name her Wynter due to the long-standing family tradition!
The Art of Growing an Ice Tree
Growing an ice tree is no easy feat. When the temperature drops to 30 degrees, water flows from a spring-fed pond. Despite concerns about water usage, the family perseveres, comparing their ice tree to any other crop that requires attention and care. Moving hoses daily ensures the ice stays pristine. The key to the tree's success is the continuous water flow and movement. Any break causes the pumps to freeze over.
Record-Setting Heights and Challenges
In 2014, the Veal family set a record with an 85-foot ice tree during a consistently cold winter. However, recent years haven't been as cooperative, with milder temperatures shortening the window for creating the magical spectacle. If you're planning to witness the ice tree this year, time is of the essence!
Plan Your Visit
Veal's Ice Tree invites you to experience the magic up close and personal! Located at 6445 Mimosa Lane, Indianapolis, IN 46259, the attraction is open seven days a week from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm.
As you plan your visit, keep in mind some safety tips:
Drive slowly, as the family's street may not be plowed, and the packed snow can make driving tricky.
Be aware of a sharp curve in the road, and for safety reasons, remain on the blacktop driveway and pavement.
If you wish to take pictures, two to three spots are available for parking, but everyone must stay on the pavement and not cross any rope barriers or enter the grass.
Veal's Ice Tree is a labor of love, and the family does not accept money or donations. Instead, they encourage visitors to support Wheeler Mission, helping those in need during freezing weather.
Don't miss out on this enchanting winter tradition – gather your family and create lasting memories at Veal's Ice Tree!
